The Water Pollution data layer displays water pollution problems across the county. These problems can have far-reaching effects, impacting everything from the quality of our drinking water to the health of our natural habitats.
You can explore this data layer to find the locations of watersheds and waterways in critical need of protection. Decreasing water pollutants through stormwater collection remedies can help restore ecosystems and improve public health.
When you add the Water Pollution data layer to the map, you will see the following sublayer:
- Drinking Water Contaminants
1. Drinking Water Contaminants
Census Tract Metric
This sublayer shows the Drinking Water Contaminate Index, which is calculated by averaging the concentration of contaminants in water systems and townships. Each contaminant and tract is ranked and assigned a percentile score, which are then added up to calculate a contaminant index for each census tract. This data is derived from the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment. Some census tracts may be left blank where there is a low population or the data is unreliable.
